Blakboi’s story…

Hey peoples, this is Tom Avery aka Blakboi and I live on the beautiful NSW North Coast. Lismore is my home on the Bundjalung Nation and I would like to acknowldge the traditional owners of this area and surrounds and also the elders of this  land, past, present and future.

I have been asked by No Smokes to blog about my up coming music/surf tour from Byron Bay, NSW to Bells Beach, VIC.

But here’s a bit about me, and my story….

I am an (ab) Original Australian and my home country is Gamilaroi land, Bohena Creek, Narrabri in sth/central NSW. I was born on  Gadigal land in Sydney. Im 33 years old and my starsign is Leo the lion. Most leo’s are stereotypically up themselves but I consider myself  just above average.  😉

I grew up on Ngoonga Land in Western Australia. We had a family home in  Perth with my mum, dad and two older sisters.

My dad taught me to surf when I was young and from the first wave, I was hooked. I’ll never forget the feeling. It was so beautiful. My dad would also take us out bush. We would help him collect blakboi tree stumps and with them he would make vases, bowls, plates and a heap of other things. So now you know where the name comes from.

He was always creating and producing different things like fibreglass boats, leather hand bags, skateboards, and surfboards. These days he writes storyies and scripts for movies and is a painter. He is my hero.

My mum is a full blooded Maori from the Taranki Province of Aotearoa, New Zealand. My musical influences and current musical styles is all due to her. As a youngster my mum sung in heaps of bands as the lead vocalist and guitarist. Growing up with her constantly singing and dancing around the house helped me to become a performer and nurtured me to enjoy music as a constant part of life and now a career.
